Symmetry breaking in cell motility

Daniel Riveline (Université de Strasbourg, IGBMC)

Abstract : Directed cell migration is important in biology. These motions with zero net force can emerge spontaneously at the single cell level and at the multi-cellular scale. We showed that single cells migrate directionally when placed in micro-environments with local broken symmetries. This ’ratchetaxis’ is driven by the dynamics of focal adhesions. We also identified simple rules to characterize directed cell motion with multipole expansions. We finally reported the behaviour of collection of cells on various patterns with controlled symmetries. I will propose generic principles involved in these phenomena.
