From granular collapse to shallow water waves : towards predictive modeling for tsunami generation

Abstract : Tsunami waves are a threat to human activities and safety along coastal areas. In this talk I will discuss on the modeling of tsunami waves generated by subaerial landslides for a better hazard assessment. A small scale experimental setup based on the collapse of a granular column in a water layer allow us to investigate the numerous parameters embedded in the wave generation. Three nonlinear wave regimes are identified depending on the Froude number based on the ratio of the velocity of the advancing granular front and the velocity of linear gravity waves in shallow water : transient bores for large Froude, solitary waves and nonlinear transition waves at smaller Froude. I will also present a predictive model which combines the spreading dynamics of the grains and the wave hydrodynamics in shallow water. Despite the differences in scale and geometry between our small-scale experiments and the larger-scale geophysical events, I will show that a rather good agreement can be found between the experiments and the field data.
