The emergent behaviour of lipid membranes under close contact

Abstract : I will cover two ongoing projects in our lab, both of which use artificial lipid membranes. In the first we explore the hydraulic fracturing of cell-cell contacts - a process that precedes the formation of biological lumens. Using adhered lipid vesicles and numerical simulations we are able to obtain a mechanistic understanding of the nucleation, spatial distribution and the growth of microlumens between vesicles, and the parameters that govern the process. In the second part of the talk I will show how encapsulated E.coli can morph lipid vesicles into active swimmers.
