Séminaire MSC lundi 26 septembre 2011 à 11h30. Alexis Prévost (LPS/ENS) : Mechanical transduction of tactile information : sensing through a frictional joint

Sauf mention contraire, les séminaires et les soutenances se déroulent à 11h30 en salle 454A du bâtiment Condorcet.

When we touch a surface, the information at the basis of our tactile representation is entirely contained in the skin vibrations elicited by the frictional skin/surface contact. These vibrations are converted into neural signals by specialized mechanoreceptors located in the first layers of the derma. In order to study this pre-neural transduction process, we developed a biomimetic anologue of the human fingertip by embedding an array of micro-force sensors within a thin elastic membrane. By scanning this artificial fingertip across micro-patterned surfaces, we were able to exhibit the response function of the tactile system that relates the substrate topography to the friction-induced subcutaneous stress signal. This device allowed us to identify a possible role played by the epidermal ridges (fingerprints) in this process. We showed that the presence of a regular pattern at the skin surface leads to a spectral selection of subcutaneous stress modulations at a specific frequency. For typical exploratory conditions, this frequency falls within the range of maximum sensitivity of one of the mechanoreceptors involved in fine texture perception. This filtering process can be quantitatively interpreted using a non-linear model of friction.
