Droplets on squishy substrates

Robert Style Department of Mechanical Engineering and Department of Geology & Geophysics Yale University, New Haven USA

Simple experiments show that droplets on squishy surfaces demonstrate some surprising behaviour. For example, Young’s law for contact angles breaks down quite significantly. We study this using confocal microscopy. We find that the reason for the surprising behaviour is the deformation of the substrate by surface tension. Our experiments also shed light on the problem of how out-of-plane force balance exists at the contact line. Finally, we exploit the failure of Young’s law to drive spontaneous droplet motion across a flat surface. This has close analogies with durotaxis - the process whereby cells move along stiffness gradients in a substrate.
