Effective temperature in living and driven matter

Out-of equilibrium systems, with non-thermal sources of forces and noise, are sometimes treated using an "effective temperature". We treat several examples of active noise observed in living systems, and in simulations of active and driven granular systems. Comparing to a simple model system of a damped active particle we demonstrate how different definitions of effective temperature arise, and can be used to characterize the active nature of the system.
