"Indirect probing of dynamic heterogeneities: the pitfalls behind \chi_4"

Abstract:

Dynamical heterogeneities (DHs) are a key ingredient of structural relaxation in glassy materials, which have been recently broadly investigated. Among the various ways of characterization, 4-point correlation functions provide a direct measurement of the associated dynamical correlation lengthscales. Recently, dynamical susceptibilities have been proposed and widely used as a convenient indirect tool. Here we show in thermosensitive microgel suspensions and simulated colloids, that the dynamical susceptibility alone is misleading for the determination of the DHs lenghtscale and timescale. It has to be considered together with a prefactor which has been implicitely wrongly assumed to be a constant in most of previous works. Another pitfall behind the use of dynamical susceptibility as an indirect tool is that we need to know the functional form of the 4-point correlation function to extract the link between direct and indirect tools. Given this, comparison between indirect and direct measurements only show qualitative agreement.
