Energy dissipation and adaptation in E.coli sensory system

Abstract: Sensory adaptation allows a receptor to recover its sensitivity after transient response to a shift in extracellular stimulus. The energy cost for accurate adaptation is addressed recently by Lan et al. in a kinetic model that implements measurement and reset of receptor activity in concert [Nat. Phys.8, 422 (2012)]. Based on exact treatments of both continuous and discrete versions of the model, we show that the dissipated heat during measurement obeys the Harada-Sasa equality, while reset incurs an additional energy cost in line with the Landauers principle. We propose a new trade-off relation between the measurement uncertainty, measurement time, and the dissipated power.
