Cell membrane shaping by BAR-domain proteinse

Patricia Bassereau, PhysicoChimie Curie, Institut Curie, Paris (France)

Cell plasma membranes are highly deformable and are strongly curved upon membrane trafficking or during cell motility. BAR-domain proteins with their intrinsically curved and anisotropic shape are involved in many of these processes. Inspired by in vivo experiments, we have used in vitro nanotube assays, together with theoretical models developed by our collaborators (A. Callan-Jones, J. Prost), for understanding the mechanical action of BAR-domain proteins on biological membranes. So, we have identified new mechanisms : a) for the initiation of protrusions or endocytic buds by weakly bent BAR-domains, b) for tube scaffolding, c) for membrane scission upon Friction-Driven Scission (FDS).
