In the past ten years we have studied experimentally, numerically and theoretically an original system of vibrated polar disks, which develop persistent motion at the level of the individual particle. At the collective level, these self propelled particles exhibit a number of fascinating phenomena such as collective motion, but also a new scenario of crystallization. In this talk I will first present our experimental and numerical results on collective motion, together with the way one can understand theoretically how they emerge in a purely repulsive system of active disks. Moving to systems at higher packing fraction, I will then describe how the crystallization transition is deeply altered by the presence of activity, eventually questioning the stability of the crystalline phase. Finally I will discuss the interactions of such disks with a flexible membrane ; how it provides a way to measure a mechanical pressure, but also the kind of new instabilities it leads to.
