Pathways of change : a random-walk model of language evolution
Quentin Feltgen (Laboratoire de Physique Statistique, Ecole Normale Supérieure, PSL).
For the most part, words no longer mean what they used to convey, for everything is changing, even the very meaning of the language components. However, these changes seem not to be arbitrary, nor follow some fashion or socio-historical mastering force. For a few decades now, linguists have evidenced the existence of conceptual chains, recurrent in many unrelated languages. Apart from this, specific changes have been increasingly studied from a quantitative point of view, and a few empirical laws have been silhouetted. Our goal, in this presentation, is to show how these two quite separated pictures can be brought together and related through a model of language change, relying on the physical tools of stochastic processes.
