Mechanical metamaterials harnesses rich geometric designs to obtain unusual physical properties and advanced functionalities such as shape morphing and programmability. This talk gives a kaleidoscopic overview of some exciting developments in this field. After a brief general introduction, I will first concentrate on machine materials : metamaterials with complex architectures that perform spatially, or temporally, ordered tasks. I’ll present a general combinatorial strategy that allows the creation of aperiodic, yet frustration-free, mechanical metamaterials that exhibit spatially textured functionalities. Moreover, I discuss the idea of mechanical pathways, and introduce mechanical metamaterials which translate a global uniform compression into a precise sequence of reconfigurations. I then discuss the physics of metamaterials : sofar most attention has been on small and pristine samples, but I’ll show that a large characteristic lengthscale arises in a wide range of metamaterials, and that this causes anomalous size effects and very strong sensitivity on boundary conditions. I close in briefly discussing some challenges and questions for future work.
