Séminaire MSC. 27 novembre 2017. : Francesco Pedaci (CBS, Centre de biochimie Structurale (Montpellier)). Salle 454A. Mechanisms of the Bacterial Flagellar Motor, a nano-scale motor and mechano-sensor.

Unless otherwise stated, seminars and defences take place at 11:30 in room 454A of Condorcet building.

The bacterial flagellar motor is the rotary motor powering swimming of many motile bacteria. Many of the components of this molecular machine are dynamic, a property which allows the cell to optimize its behavior in accordance to the surrounding environment. A prime example is the stator unit, a membrane-bound ion channel which is responsible for applying torque to the rotor. The stator units of the motor, a dozen in total, are mechano-sensitive: more stators are recruited in the motor to produce higher torque if the viscous load and the resistance to rotation increases. By external manipulation of individual motors on living cells, we measure the dynamics of the stators as a function of the viscous load and, using a simple adsorption model, we find that the mechano-sensitivity of the motor is governed by a "catch-bond": a counterintuitive type of bond which becomes stronger under tension. http://www.cbs.cnrs.fr/index.php/fr...
