Phase co-existence in bidimensional passive and active dumbbell systems

Abstract: I will discuss the stationary behaviour of passive and active interacting dumbbell systems in two dimensions. Contrary to the usual picture of active matter, I will show that there is macroscopic co-existence between relatively dense regions with hexatic order and lose regions in the liquid/gas phase over a finite interval of packing fractions. In the passive limit this interval remains finite, similarly to what was found in bidimensional systems of hard and soft disks by W. Krauth and collaborators, and no finite activity strength is needed for the phase separation.

This talk will be based on the contents of the Physical Review Latter with the same title, authored by Leticia F. Cugliandolo, Pasquale Digregorio, Giuseppe Gonnell and Antonio Suma.
