Field theory for amorphous solids
Eric DeGiuli
Abstract: Statistical physicists have long been searching for general frameworks to study out-of-equilibrium systems. Long ago, with granular matter in mind, Edwards proposed that one should take the uniform ensemble over all metastable states. This simple statement belies two great difficulties, which have preoccupied the field in the past decades: first, establishing the relevant macroscopic control parameters that characterize metastable states; second, actually performing the highly constrained sum over metastable states. I will present some new results in a field-theoretical framework that overcome the main difficulties, and give, as a simple application, explicit results for long-range stress correlations in amorphous solids.
