Quantitative chemistry of nanomaterials. From fundamental studies and towards a practical application

Résumé :

JPEG - 223.4 ko

We, as scientists or everyday citizens, are fed a steady diet of the promises offered by nanoscience and nanotechnology. While nanomaterials can now be found in thousands of products, their end-use is somewhat more trivial than the killer applications that were expected in medicine or energy. Here I will interrogate these observations and discuss my personal take on the reasons why nano has yet to deliver a breakthrough application. The challenges encountered when engineering a complex nanomaterials will be highlighted in the context of the development of an anti-cancer agent based on quantum dots. I will then show how working with (shockingly) simple nanocomponents can lead to functional materials with both a high degree of control over the structure and properties and to sample scales that could empower the development of applications.
