50 Shapes of Gorgonians. What the hell is Gorgonia ventalina ? An investigation by a physicist into the biological world, through cities, 3D reconstruction, beams, plates, trees, despair and happiness.

What are shapes in nature, how do they appear, and why shapes are the way they are ? I wanted to elucidate such questions but I am a fluid mechanist. So I found an organism (gorgonia ventalina, a soft coral) which had huge interaction with mechanics. Lucky me, they exhibit very interesting shapes, with a lot of properties. How can we describe that shape ? How can we determine its properties ? How can we understand its behaviour, both in an ecological and mechanical approach ? I’ll try to give you some insight on theses questions (spoiler : I have no real answer), and talk a little bit about my process through this mess. Maybe you’ll learn few tricks, maybe you’ll avoid mistakes I have done these last two years, or maybe you will go straight into them. What is sure is that you are going to : eat (well), see nice pictures, hear some bad jokes and have a good time. Come !
