In this talk I will present two recent studies dealing with the capillary assembly of objects. In the first example, I will discuss the interaction of a fibrous media with a liquid, a common occurrence in industrial processes where fibers are present (paper, textile, filters etc.). In this case, the fibers are brought together by a coupling between elasticity and capillarity. When liquid bridges are placed between two parallel fibers, the fibers may collapse. We study this capillary assembly and report two types of wet adhesion : a weak capillary adhesion and a strongelastocapillary adhesion where the liquid spreads between the two deformed fibers.

In the second example I will talk about the clustering of dense millimeter-sized beads placed at an oil-water interface. The interfacial deformation created by such a two-dimensional object exceeds by at least an order of magnitude the deformation of a single bead. This leads to unusually high capillary forces which strongly depend on the number of particles. Likewise, because the raft grows in size as more particles are added, the viscous drag experienced increases along with the capillary attraction, leading to a non-trivial dependence of the balance of forces on the number of beads. With this work, we generalize how the capillary interaction between two non-identical complex structures evolves with their respective geometry.
