Summary of the team’s interests

We are interested in studying information processing and computation by biological systems. How do rich, interesting, surprising, behaviors emerge ? What principles guide how living systems deal with information in order to adapt and take decisions ?

Summary of the internship project

Dissociated neuronal cultures are populations of biological neurons grown in artificial environments. Although such artificial networks of true neurons don’t reproduce the whole complexity of natural networks in the brain, the provide a powerful tool to investigate in vitro mechanisms of neuronal activity.

The questions which will be considered during this internship focus on understanding how the network structures and constraints determine neuronal behaviors and how information is processed. In collaboration with a leading experimental group on neuronal devices at the Weizmann Institute (http://www.weizmann.ac.il/complex/E...) we propose to develop analysis and theoretical tools to investigate the observed behaviors
