Tissue mechanics in morphogenesis: Focus on theoretical modeling

This is an informal workshop open to anyone, theorist or experimentalist, who is developing or is using theoretical models to understand tissue mechanics in morphogenesis.

Please note that participants are responsible for finding their own accommodation in Paris, and that we are unable to guarantee any funding.

How tissues acquire and maintain their shape is a crucial question at the crossroad between developmental biology and physics, which requires the joint efforts of experimentalists and theorists. Theoretical modeling plays different roles in this context: it guides experiments, helps data analysis and provides conceptual and predictive frameworks, which are instrumental to understand tissue morphogenesis and homeostasis.

Several models have been developed over the past years, some are published, and some others are in preparation. This workshop aims at encouraging:

- discussions between researchers in the field

- exchange of published and unpublished information

- discussion of respective advantages and drawbacks of each models/theory

- link between different scales: molecule, cell, tissue

- studies of dynamical processes in morphogenesis

- new approaches to data analysis

- improvement of existing models

- development of new theory/models

- new collaborations

Structure of the workshop

The workshop is purposely informal:

- free registration (and no support for finding money or lodging)

- discussions and chalk-talks, rather than video-projections and invited speakers

At each discussion, participants will design a time-keeper and a secretary to take notes.


The workshop aim is to discuss scientific questions and ideas in the field of tissue mechanics and developmental biology. Links between theory, numerical simulations and experiments will be discussed, and the interplay between data analysis and modelling will be a major focus of the workshop.

Although the exact program will be determined with the participants, as a tentative guideline, each session will be dedicated to a major theme. Each session will start by a review of the current state of the field by one of the participants, aiming at identifying key unsolved questions and bottlenecks to be discussed.

Discussions will be held approximately from 9h to 12h30 and from 14h to 17h30, with breaks.

Monday 9th, afternoon: Mechanics and flows I: from cells to tissues

Speaker: Alexandre Kabla

Questions pertain here to how the cellular scale and tissue scale mechanics are connected and how these different scales can be captured in a theoretical framework.

Tuesday 10th, morning: Challenges raised by experimental observations

Speakers: Kaoru Sugimura and Julien Vermot

We will discuss unsolved experimental questions that could pose new challenges for theory development.

Tuesday 10th, afternoon: Morphogens, signalling, patterning

Speaker: Vincent Hakim

We will discuss models of tissue patterning, positional information, gradients of morphogens.

Wednesday 11th, morning: Mechanics and flows II: tissue rheology

Speaker: Ulrich Schwarz

We will discuss the mechanics of monolayers, the role of the substrate, how the complex rheology of tissue can be described and understood in two and three dimensions, tissue elasticity, and in-vitro systems.

Wednesday 11th, afternoon: free

We will have the choice between self-organised working groups to deepen some technical issues, discussions for mutual presentations of our research, or social program.

Thursday 12th, morning: Numerical aspects of tissue simulations

Speaker: Alexander Fletcher

We will discuss what are scientific and technical challenges in performing simulations of tissues and how they can be met.

Thursday 12th, afternoon: Dynamical aspects

Speaker: Guillaume Salbreux

We will discuss dynamic processes in tissues such as genetic and mechanical oscillations, and the origin and possible role of fluctuations in tissues.

Friday 13th, morning: Tissue growth

Speaker: Arezki Boudaoud

The workshop will end with a discussion on tissue growth, the regulation of cell division and apoptosis, and the maintenance of tissue homeostasis.


To favor discussions, the room seats only 30 persons. The number of participants simultaneously present is thus strictly limited to 30 and registration, although free, is mandatory: scroll down for the registration form.

The workshop is opened to anybody, from beginner to advanced researcher, who has been or is currently developing or using theoretical models to understand the role of mechanics in tissue morphogenesis and homeostasis. It covers analytical and numerical models, for animal, plant or in vitro tissues.

The selection of participants aims at balancing the different models, backgrounds and fields of research. A few seats are kept for researchers in related fields.


Please read carefully in advance the following explanations and print the map.

The “Paris Rive Gauche” campus of University Paris 7 “Denis Diderot” is in the south-east of Paris (XIIIth district), between the National Library and the ringroad. It can be accessed (see map) from:

- the station “Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand” of RER C ; exit at the head of the train if you come from downtown Paris;

- the station “Bibliothèque François-Mitterrand” of subway line 14 : exit n°3 “rue Goscinny” is quicker but has staircases, while exits n°1 and n°2 are more suitable if you have luggages;

- by buses 62, 64, 89, 325;

- by the station “Avenue de France” of Tramway 3a;

- and by the “velib” bicycles.

From subway line 14, RER C or bus 89 (station “Bibliothèque François Mitterrand”) go to the Seine by walking downhill (ie go towards north-east), then turn right.

If you arrive at lunch time,

especially for those of you who arrive at Monday noon, please meet us at the University Buffon restaurant. It is in building Buffon, and the entrance is at 17 rue Hélène Brion, close to the figure “4” on the map. It is an ill-marked door, just on the right of the Institut Jacques Monod entrance.

If you arrive at the time of a session,

please meet us in the meeting room: Condorcet A building, 6th floor, room 646A “Mondrian”. The Condorcet building is close to the Seine river and has a distinct brown-orange color; its entrance is at 10 rue Alice Domon et Léonie Duquet, close to the figure “3” on the map.


- These streets are new. Some commercial maps or GPS systems have not yet incorporated them. Watt street, which is almost identical to Alice Domon and Léonie Duquet street, is normally always indicated.

- Building Condorcet is subdivided into two subunits, Condorcet A and Condorcet B, which are connected only at the ground floor (as well as a footbridge at 4th floor and another one at 6th floor).

- You might be asked by guards to open your bags and/or show your ID.


Participants are responsible for finding their own accommodation in Paris, or south-east suburb such as Ivry.

We do not recommend one more than the other, but we suggest:

- Either choosing a place close to the University, see map of hotels: there are a few hotels at walking distance from rue Watt, and a few others grouped across the river Seine in the Bercy area.

- Or choosing something downtown Paris, in a more touristic area. Note that the lab can be reached through :

a quick metro line (n°14) to “Gare de Lyon” train station and right bank touristic areas (Châtelet, Madeleine);

a train line (RER C) to “Austerliz” train station and left bank touristic areas (Saint-Michel, Musée d'Orsay, Eiffel Tower);

a bus (n°89) to the Latin Quarter (Panthéon);

a tram which goes to the Vincennes Wood or Cité Universitaire.
