Microscale biophysical coupling in the plankton
Microscale processes, typically occurring at the scale of individual organisms such as viral infection, nutrient uptake, competition, predation and mating, have widely been neglected in plankton ecology. Here, on the basis of both empirical and theoretical work we illustrate how phytoplankton (micrometer-scale single celled plants advected by water motion) and zooplankton (millimetre-scale swimming crustaceans) interact at these minute scales with the physical properties of their surrounding fluid environment, in particular turbulence, seawater viscosity and pollutants, and exhibit a range of behavioural adaptive behavioural strategies to environmental forcing, and also how they can be thought as microscale bioengineers able to modify their environment mainly through biologically-induced modification of water viscous properties.
